Standing before you now is the Machinepompgebouw. This building tells a silent story of Amsterdam’s water management.

The Machinepompgebouw was constructed between 1898 and 1900. It originally housed the municipal waterworks pumps. The building may appear massive. Its ornate brickwork gives a friendly impression.

Step inside the two central halls of the Machinepompgebouw. Now, it is home to Café-Restaurant Amsterdam. It is worth a visit for its architecture alone. Pass through the purely functional entrance. You enter a gigantic hall. A beautiful wooden gable roof stretches above you.

Until its closure in 1996, the machines inside pumped drinking water. They moved water from reservoirs into the city. Imagine the rhythmic thrum of the pumps. They worked tirelessly day and night.

Look at the building’s structure. There are four interconnected halls. The brick facades are adorned with battlements. The two middle halls soar over 15 meters high.

The left hall once served as a workshop and warehouse. The two central halls contained the pumps themselves. The hall to the right was the boiler house. A tall chimney once stood beside it. Sadly, the chimney is now gone.

The Machinepompgebouw stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s history. It is a reminder of the city’s innovative approach to essential services. It is a place where function meets architectural beauty. So, enjoy a meal or a drink. Appreciate the history within these walls of the Machinepompgebouw.
