Ever wondered why Lisserbrug connects two seemingly different worlds? This drawbridge is more than just steel and concrete. It is a vital link between Lisserbroek and Lisse.

Lisserbrug spans the Ringvaart of the Haarlemmermeerpolder. This waterway separates the North Holland village of Lisserbroek from the South Holland town of Lisse. The bridge carries the Lisserbroekweg and Lisserdijk, seamlessly joining them with Kanaalstraat.

Let’s jump back in time. Imagine the 1840s. The Haarlemmermeer was being drained. Before that, Lisserbroek often found itself partially underwater. Turfspoor road marks the edge of this ancient, marshy tongue of land. As the Haarlemmermeer was drying out from 1840 to 1852, the eastern part of the Lisserbroekpolder was cut off by the ringvaart.

In those days, the first bridge appeared. It was a wooden roller bridge built in the 1840s. This was the very first bridge across the ringvaart. It even predated the complete draining of the Haarlemmermeer in 1852. Soon after, more bridges and ferries linked the old land across the ringvaart.

By 1860, the roller bridge was decaying. Funds were short. The most urgent repairs kept it going. However, in 1863, a new iron wagon bridge was built. Just fourteen years later, in 1877, it was replaced by an iron swing bridge.

Fast forward over a century. That bridge was worn out. In 1967 and 1968, the current Lisserbrug was constructed. It opened to traffic on April 6, 1968.

The waterschap Groot-Haarlemmermeer managed the bridge. Later, control shifted to the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. Today, an operator controls the bridge from the bridge keeper’s house. It sits on the west side. Barriers ensure safety.

Think about the past. People needed a reliable crossing. Now, bus line 162 uses the Lisserbrug. It provides a crucial public transport connection.

The Lisserbrug has seen many changes. It replaced earlier structures. These crossings helped to overcome geographical barriers. The Lisserbrug facilitates modern life. The Lisserbrug continues its role. It adapts to modern needs while retaining its historical essence. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity. It links communities across water. It is a simple functional object and it represents connection and progress.
