Glistening under the Passau sky, the Leuchtender Kristall Sculpture beckons us closer. This dazzling artwork sits right here on the Ilzbrücke. What you’re looking at is no ordinary crystal. It’s a monument to Passau’s history. The Leuchtender Kristall is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a reminder of the city’s past.

Back in 2010, city officials wanted a piece of art for this spot. They held a contest and Dietrich Förster won. His vision was unique. Förster proposed a sculpture of a salt crystal magnified a hundred times. This was to honor the Golden Path, a trade route that once passed through Passau. The Leuchtender Kristall serves as a sparkling reminder of this important route.

The initial plan was to create the Leuchtender Kristall from glued white glass sheets. These sheets would form a cube measuring about one meter on each side. This cube would then sit atop a steel pillar. However, there was a problem. The design with the glass sheets at a 45-degree angle couldn’t get approval. Authorities worried about the safety of drivers below. They feared glass pieces might fall from the “floating” sculpture.

Since the design was unique, there were no existing safety approvals. To solve this, they explored a special “individual approval”. This required extensive testing of materials and construction. After a series of tests, a solution was found. The Leuchtender Kristall is now made of special artificial glass. It is much stronger and lighter than regular glass. An engineer confirmed the safety of this design.

Originally planned for completion in 2011, the Leuchtender Kristall was finally revealed on May 12, 2014. The sculpture cost around 67,000 euros. It stands about 3.20 meters tall. Sadly, problems arose soon after its unveiling. Cracks appeared in the glued areas of the glass sculpture. The Leuchtender Kristall had to be taken down for repairs.

The artist, Dietrich Förster, investigated the cause. He found that the gluing process was flawed. The heating process was too short. Also, the glue shrank too much as it hardened. Förster sued the company responsible and hired another to rebuild the sculpture. After a long wait, the Leuchtender Kristall returned in March 2015.

Unfortunately, the problems didn’t end there. In the summer of 2018, more issues appeared. Stress built up in the glued areas. Moisture got in, causing clouding. The Leuchtender Kristall became unsafe again. So, it was removed in June 2018 for another repair.

This time, the manufacturer took the Leuchtender Kristall apart. They used a new glue and a careful heating process to reduce stress. After six months, the repaired Leuchtender Kristall was back in place on January 9, 2019.

But, in April 2019, more damage was found. The glue was failing again. For the third time, the Leuchtender Kristall was taken away. During this repair, the glass pieces were also bolted together. This was to handle the constant stress on the glue joints. The surface of the Leuchtender Kristall was also made matte. On June 2, 2020, the reworked crystal was reinstalled.

So, as you gaze upon the Leuchtender Kristall, remember its rocky past. It represents the Golden Path and the resilience of art. It’s a symbol of Passau’s history. Despite its challenges, the Leuchtender Kristall stands tall.
