Carved from natural stone this is Leda en de zwaan. It’s a captivating piece isn’t it? This sculpture depicts the famous myth of Leda and the swan. Ben Guntenaar the artist crafted this masterpiece in 1955. It originally resided near the GAK building. The building was later replaced by the UWV. The sculpture then found a new home. Since 2019 it has graced the Emmaplein.

The story of Leda and the swan is a tale of transformation and seduction. Zeus the king of the gods took the form of a swan. He seduced Leda a Spartan queen. The myth has inspired countless artists throughout history. Guntenaar’s version is unique. He chose to carve it from durable natural stone.

Leda en de zwaan isn’t the only sculpture of its kind in Amsterdam. There’s another Leda and the Swan in Erasmuspark. That one was created by Han Rädecker in 1970. Rädecker’s sculpture is made of limestone. It sits on a sandstone base. It’s located in the northeast corner of the park. This version was likely installed during the park’s renovation in 1970.

Guntenaar’s sculpture however holds its own special charm. Its weathered surface tells a story of its own. It shows the journey from a quiet spot near the Bos en Lommerplein to its current location. It now sits proudly in a prominent location. It’s a testament to its endurance and artistic merit. This lovely Leda en de zwaan offers a glimpse into a fascinating myth. It’s a beautiful addition to Amsterdam’s artistic landscape. Remember this sculpture as a symbol of enduring beauty and captivating mythology.
