Across the Amstel River, the Landje van Geijsel whispers a story of resilience and rebirth. This internationally recognized bird sanctuary, a haven for countless feathered travelers, owes its existence to the vision of one man. Jan Geijsel, a local farmer, transformed this 7.5-hectare plot into a vital pit stop for migrating birds. He flooded the fields in early spring, creating the perfect refueling point for birds returning from their arduous journeys from Southern Europe and Africa. The Landje van Geijsel quickly became known as a “Grutto paradise”. Thousands of these elegant birds descend upon the area, their distinctive calls echoing across the water. They are joined by a vibrant chorus of other species. Scholeksters, Kemphanen, Kievit, and Pijlstaarten all find refuge in this rich ecosystem. Even rarer species like the Lepelaar, Groenpootruiter, Bontbekplevier, Oeverloper, and Zomertaling come to replenish their energy reserves. Since 2013, the province of Noord-Holland owned the Landje van Geijsel. But Jan Geijsel remained its dedicated caretaker for over 19 years. His careful management of the water levels is crucial for the area’s success. In 2019, Landschap Noord-Holland acquired the land. They ensured the future of this vital habitat with the help of donations from nearly 2,000 individuals. From a birdwatching hide, the Vogelwerkgroep Ouderkerk aan de Amstel actively educates visitors about the diverse birdlife and the importance of the Landje van Geijsel. The Landje van Geijsel reminds us that even small interventions can have a huge impact on the natural world. It stands as a testament to the power of individual initiative and community collaboration in preserving our planet’s precious biodiversity.
