Hidden amongst where three medieval dikes converge, lies the Kruitmagazijn bij de Dam. This isn’t just any building. It’s a time capsule from a pivotal era in Amsterdam’s defense. Constructed between 1893 and 1897, the Kruitmagazijn bij de Dam played a crucial role in the Stelling van Amsterdam, a complex defense system designed to protect the city. Imagine Amsterdam surrounded by forts, batteries, dikes, and sluices, all working together to protect the capital. The Stelling van Amsterdam was a marvel of military engineering, capable of flooding the surrounding lands to deter invaders. The Kruitmagazijn bij de Dam was strategically placed along a covered connecting road between Fort bij Veldhuis and Fort aan den Ham. This allowed soldiers to move undetected and provided easy access to ammunition for nearby batteries. The Kruitmagazijn bij de Dam itself is comprised of four rectangular rooms. Two of these were designated as ‘kruitkamers’, where precise amounts of gunpowder were packed into bags called ‘kardoezen’. These ‘kardoezen’ allowed for quick and efficient loading of projectiles, enabling soldiers to adjust their firing range rapidly. This seemingly simple building played a vital role in Amsterdam’s defense strategy.
