Seven hundred years ago a tiny peat-digging settlement began to grow. That settlement became Krommenie. Nestled in the heart of North Holland Krommenie boasts a rich history. It survived a devastating fire in 1702. The town then embraced industrialization during the 19th century. Krommenie wasn’t always part of Zaanstad. It was its own municipality until 1974. That year it joined the larger Zaanstad area.

Picture this: the year is 1602. A secret gathering takes place. An Old Catholic Church a clandestine place of worship secretly opens within a humble farm. Its walls witnessed quiet devotion and silent prayers. This church was later enlarged in 1633. It continued to adapt over time. Further modifications occurred in 1826.

The Dutch Reformed church also holds a special place in Krommenie’s heart. A single-aisled structure dating back to the 15th century this church has known its share of trials. In 1574 it suffered severe fire damage. A significant restoration occurred between 1657 and 1658. The church stands as a testament to resilience and enduring faith.

Krommenie is not just about the past. It embraces innovation too. It proudly claims the title of the world’s first town with a solar bike path. The SolaRoad a pioneering project featuring solar cells embedded within a transparent surface. This path generated electricity feeding it back to the grid. It was 70 meters long and served as a proof of concept. Unfortunately this groundbreaking technology wasn’t long-lasting. It was later removed after vandalism.

Today Krommenie is a thriving town. Its history is woven into its streets. You can still see echoes of its past in its architecture and its churches. The vibrant community spirit is as strong as ever. It is a place where the old and new harmoniously coexist. Krommenie’s story continues to unfold. It is a story of resilience innovation and community. It is a story worth exploring. Take a moment to admire the town. Let its history inspire you. Let the energy of its present captivate you. Krommenie’s legacy will stay with you.
