Restored and reborn, Kraan 2868 stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s maritime past. This is no ordinary crane. It’s a symbol of resilience and reinvention. Let’s delve into the captivating story of this iconic structure.

Kraan 2868, also known as the Figeekraan, is the last remaining harbor crane on the Surinamekade. The crane is on Amsterdam-Oost. It was built in 1957 by the N.V. Haarlemsche Machinefabriek. The builders were the Gebroeders Figee. The Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij or KNSM commissioned it. It operated until 1979. The municipality began redeveloping the area into a residential district. All the cranes were slated for removal.

Fortunately, local residents recognized the crane’s significance. They convinced the city to preserve it. Kraan 2868 became an icon for the city. It gained status as a municipal monument on November 29, 2011.

Fast forward to January 2016. Kraan 2868 was transported over the IJ to a sister company of Scheepswerf Talsma in Franeker. There it underwent a complete renovation. The restoration took about a year. The original structure was preserved. The skeleton and frame remain as they were in the past.

A unique transformation took place. The crane was converted into a three-story apartment. In November 2017, the newly christened “The Yays Crane Apartment” officially opened.

The apartment features a living room and kitchen on the first floor. The second floor houses a bedroom and bathroom with a shower and bathtub. The former control room now serves as the master bedroom. It provides panoramic views of the IJ.

Kraan 2868 stands on a remaining section of the crane track. Another fragment exists on Java Island at the Bogortuin. An old ship’s anchor lies next to the crane. It serves as a reminder of the area’s maritime history.

The renovation aimed to create a practical space. It also provided an exceptional guest experience. The two blue containers once housed the crane’s machinery. Their colors were carefully chosen. They reflect the building’s original purpose. They also create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

New stairs and lighting were added for safety. Electric locks were installed on the doors. A bench was placed on the top floor. It allows guests to enjoy the stunning views of the IJ River.

Kraan 2868 is more than just a restored crane. It is a symbol of Amsterdam’s industrial past. It is a testament to the power of community. It is a unique place where history and modern comfort meet.

The last machinist of Kraan 2868 said, “It seems as if time has been turned back”. Kraan 2868 invites you to experience a piece of Amsterdam’s soul. It offers a stay unlike any other. It stands as a beacon. It connects the city’s past with its vibrant future.
