Across the tranquil waters of the Vecht River, Korenmolen de Ruiter stands proudly. It whispers tales of resilience and rebirth. Korenmolen de Ruiter wasn’t always here. The story begins in 1776 with a humble poldermolen, a windmill designed to drain land. This original mill was a binnenkruier, meaning its cap stayed fixed while the sails turned to catch the wind. Then, in 1910, disaster struck the older mill that stood on this site. A fire, sparked by a desperate attempt to stop the runaway sails, consumed the mill. From the ashes of this tragedy, a new Korenmolen de Ruiter emerged. The 1776 poldermolen, no longer needed for its original purpose, found a new home and a new life in Vreeland. Transformed into a stellingmolen, it gained a platform allowing access to the sails. It also became a buitenkruier, meaning the entire top of the mill could rotate to face the wind. Korenmolen de Ruiter faced its own challenges. In 1977 and again in 2000, extensive restorations were needed to preserve its structure and function. Today, thanks to these efforts, the mill thrives. It grinds grain for local bakers, its sails turning gracefully against the sky. Korenmolen de Ruiter stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Dutch ingenuity and the power of transformation.
