“Have you ever wondered where Jehovah’s Witnesses gather? Here at the Koninkrijkszaal van Jehovah’s Getuigen. This is no ordinary church. It’s a place of community and faith.
The Koninkrijkszaal van Jehovah’s Getuigen serves the Amsterdam community. It encourages others through a life-changing journey. The mission is to nurture a diverse community. This community is committed to following God. It makes disciples of Jesus Christ. They aim to transform Amsterdam and the world.
Interestingly, Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t use the terms “churches” or “church services.” They prefer “(koninkrijks)zalen” and “vergaderingen” or meetings. In Amsterdam, there are ten Koninkrijkszalen. Twenty-three Jehovah congregations gather here.
This Koninkrijkszaal is on Sophie Redmondplein. It is named after Sophie Redmond. Redmond was the first black woman to graduate as a doctor in Suriname in 1935. She also worked for women’s rights. She fought for Surinamese cultural heritage. Redmond inspires many even today. She is especially important to Amsterdam Zuidoost residents of Surinamese descent.
This specific Koninkrijkszaal van Jehovah’s Getuigen has an interesting story. In the development of Geinwijk, there was a contest. It was for a community plan for Sophie Redmondplein. Jehovah’s Witnesses won this contest. Since 1997, their Koninkrijkszaal has stood here. Every week, 300 to 400 Jehovah’s Witnesses meet at the Koninkrijkszaal on Sophie Redmondplein.
Jehovah’s Witnesses designed and built the Koninkrijkszaal themselves. The floor plan is an equal-sided triangle. An entrance section sticks out. The shape fits the Sophie Redmondplein’s triangular form. The building is on the south side of the square. The entrance faces the square’s center. It sits on a rise and has three steps. These steps form a semicircle. This makes the building stand out. The facade is mostly dark brown brickwork. The west side and entrance have wooden slats.
The Koninkrijkszaal welcomes Christians. It welcomes those seeking to understand Christianity in Amsterdam. The aim is to encourage others. They want them to join in their Christian journey. It is a friendly Christian community. People are welcome to join in worship and service to God. The focus is on learning and understanding the Bible. They follow the example of Jesus.
The Koninkrijkszaal wants to impact Amsterdam. They want to help people understand eternal hope. This hope comes from Jesus Christ’s words and deeds. All are welcome.
The Koninkrijkszaal van Jehovah’s Getuigen is more than a building. It is a testament to faith. It represents community spirit. It embodies a commitment to serving a higher purpose right here in Amsterdam.”
