High unemployment, at 11.5% in 2009, combined with other social issues, led to its inclusion on a list of the Netherlands’ most troubled neighborhoods. Yet, even during these difficult times, around 80-85% of its residents, largely of foreign descent, called Kolenkitbuurt home. The community’s spirit shone through in events like the Cinema Al Kolenkit Festival in 2012, held at Ernest Staesplein, which brought together film, literature, and lively discussions. This demonstrated the vibrant cultural life that persisted despite the challenges. In the years that followed, Kolenkitbuurt underwent significant urban renewal. Many of the original post-war buildings were replaced with modern housing, breathing new life into the area. One striking example is the New Kit, a 17-story building completed in 2011, its name a nod to the iconic Kolenkit church. This renewal, while positive in many ways, also brought the challenges of gentrification, changing the neighborhood’s social fabric. Today, Kolenkitbuurt stands as a testament to the power of community and resilience. It’s a neighborhood that has faced adversity head-on, embracing change while retaining its unique character.
