Ever wonder about the bridges that connect not just land, but also eras? Here at the Kogerpolderbrug we are standing at such a point. This bascule bridge might seem like a simple crossing. However, it holds stories of innovation, necessity and connection.

The Kogerpolderbrug spans the Noordhollandsch Kanaal on the N246. This canal runs east to west. It sits on the southern edge of the Schermer polder.

Let’s talk about what makes this bridge special. The Kogerpolderbrug features a unique design. It has separate lanes for different directions. If you are heading south you will see one lane. When heading north look to your left to see two lanes. These extra lanes are for traffic merging onto the N244. To the west there is a two-way bike path. This helps cyclists cross safely. Under the southern approach bridge a local dike road passes.

Interestingly the Kogerpolderbrug shares its design with the Prinses Amaliabrug. The province wanted both bridges to look like they belonged to the same family. Designers used sleek bridge decks and pointy pillar tops. This makes both bridges appear slimmer.

Now let’s dive into some clever engineering. Instead of underwater concrete the builders used weighted concrete to fill the ballast box. This sped up construction.

The history of crossings at this location is quite interesting. Before the N246 existed only small dike roads were here. A narrow floating bridge once allowed passage over the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. In 1957 Rijkswaterstaat began replacing the floating bridge. By 1960 a bascule bridge opened along with the N246.

Over time the old Kogerpolderbrug struggled with increasing traffic. Evening rush hour brought long queues. The single lane connection to the N244 was a major issue. Poor visibility led to many accidents. In 2009 a system warned drivers of congestion and bridge openings.

Between 2018 and 2020 the old Kogerpolderbrug was replaced. This was part of a larger project to improve the N244a and N246. The new Kogerpolderbrug cost around 42 million euros together with the Amaliabrug. An extra waiting area was added on the bridge. This improved traffic flow at the N244 intersection.

During construction a temporary fixed bridge was built nearby. This ensured traffic could still pass. Prefab components were used to reduce construction time. The current Kogerpolderbrug opened to cars on February 8, 2020. Ship traffic began using it on March 16, 2020.

Today around 14000 vehicles cross the Kogerpolderbrug daily. As you stand here consider the blend of history and modern engineering. The Kogerpolderbrug isn’t just a way to cross the canal. It is a testament to the continuous effort to improve and connect. It reflects the region’s growth and adaptation. Take a moment to appreciate this functional yet significant structure. It represents progress connecting communities.
