Here at Knooppunt Holendrecht, the story of Dutch infrastructure unfolds. This isn’t just a junction. It’s a testament to decades of planning and adaptation.
Knooppunt Holendrecht is where the A2 and A9 motorways meet. It lies south of Amsterdam in Noord-Holland. The junction is named after the Holendrecht river. This river flows just south of this very spot.
Interestingly, Knooppunt Holendrecht isn’t one but two junctions. They sit just a kilometer apart. Think of them as twins working together. Holendrecht-Noord is a half-turbine interchange. Holendrecht-Zuid is a trumpet interchange.
The A2 runs straight through. The A9 begins and ends here. This design manages traffic flow efficiently.
Let’s rewind to the 1940s. Work began on the A2 between Amsterdam and Utrecht. But the section around Knooppunt Holendrecht only started in 1951. The first carriageway opened in 1952. The entire A2 opened in 1954. It had two lanes in each direction.
In 1968, grand plans emerged for rijksweg 6. It would run from Velsen to Groningen. Knooppunt Holendrecht would be its southern tip. The design was ambitious. It was called a “vlinderdas” or bow tie. But budget cuts changed everything. The junction was built as minimally as possible.
Rijksweg 6 opened to Knooppunt Holendrecht-Zuid in 1974. This made the junction a reality. In 1978, this part of the A9 expanded. It gained two lanes in each direction. The A9 between Diemen and Holendrecht-Noord opened later in 1982. The Meibergdreef connected in 2000. This completed Knooppunt Holendrecht in its current form.
Between 2006 and 2010, the A2 south of Knooppunt Holendrecht widened. It grew to five lanes in each direction. A short section even has six lanes.
The plan to connect Holendrecht and Muiderberg with a tunnel resurfaced. But the government chose to expand existing highways.
The road between Holendrecht and Diemen widened to five lanes. A reversible lane was added. Part of this section is a tunnel. Four new structures were built on the northern part. A flyover connects Amsterdam-Zuidoost to Utrecht. It opened in December 2017.
To prevent Knooppunt Holendrecht from becoming a bottleneck, it was expanded. In Holendrecht-Noord, roads were widened and viaducts added. Holendrecht-Zuid gained a new viaduct.
