Thirty-one bells. Can you imagine their combined song? This is the Klokkenstoel a carillon tower in Amsterdam. It’s more than just a tower though. It’s a living monument. A testament to freedom.

The Klokkenstoel wasn’t always here. Plans for a ‘Freedom Carillon’ began during the war years. The idea was to create a musical tribute to those who fought for liberty. There was debate about its location Rotterdam? The Hague? Or Amsterdam? Ultimately Amsterdam was chosen. The capital city.

In 1952 the Klokkenstoel’s bells were cast. Twenty-three of them by the Van Bergen foundry. The largest weighs approximately 172 kg. Eight more bells were added later. The goal was to broadcast the carillon daily. The plan was to share songs of resistance over the radio. This would keep the memory of the war alive.

Architect D Slebos designed the Klokkenstoel’s unique structure. In 1961 a concrete base was built. A platform was added. It holds a glass cabin. This houses the bells’ mechanism.

The official inauguration was special. Queen Juliana Prince Bernhard and government officials were present. On May 5 1961 Romke de Waard played the first melodies. The Klokkenstoel’s music filled the air. A hopeful sound.

Today the Klokkenstoel still rings. Mathieu Polak plays on the first and third Saturdays of each month. His music echoes through the city. A powerful reminder of Amsterdam’s history and resilience. Each chime tells a story. A story of war. A story of hope. And a story of freedom. The Klokkenstoel. A symbol of Amsterdam itself. A unique tribute to resilience.
