Did you know KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is the world’s oldest operating airline? Right here in Amstelveen you stand before KLM’s headquarters a testament to aviation history. Founded in 1919 by eight Dutch businessmen KLM’s first administrator and director was the visionary Albert Plesman. He championed the fledgling airline through its early years. This was a time when flights were pioneering adventures. KLM’s first flight in 1920 was a relatively short hop from London to Amsterdam. It wasn’t long before KLM set its sights higher. Their first intercontinental flight in 1924 reached faraway Batavia now Jakarta Indonesia. This was a monumental undertaking taking over a week to complete. Can you imagine?

The journey wasn’t without peril. KLM experienced its share of tragic accidents. The ‘black week’ of July 1935 saw three fatal crashes. This resulted in a severe shortage of pilots and aircraft. Despite setbacks KLM persevered. The Second World War severely disrupted operations. Yet KLM found a way to continue operations in the Caribbean. After the war the airline quickly rebuilt its network reinstating flights to Batavia. By 1946 KLM became the first continental European airline to offer scheduled transatlantic flights to New York City. This is a remarkable feat.

KLM adapted to the jet age introducing its first Douglas DC-8 jet in 1960. This was a huge step forward. The airline played a significant role in the introduction of the iconic Boeing 747 becoming the first to operate the 747-200B. KLM’s innovative spirit led to the creation of the KSS maintenance consortium with Scandinavian Airlines and Swissair. This improved maintenance efficiency and cost savings. KLM continued to expand its international network acquiring stakes in other airlines and strengthening its hub at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries witnessed KLM’s merger with Air France forming Air France-KLM. This merger created a global powerhouse in the airline industry. The airline continues to innovate offering services such as Meet & Seat connecting passengers through social media. KLM is actively involved in environmental initiatives too. They offer customers the option to contribute to sustainable aviation fuel programs and reforestation projects.

Today KLM Royal Dutch Airlines remains a symbol of Dutch ingenuity and global connectivity. As you depart remember this place. Remember the story of KLM a journey of inspiration from a modest beginning to a worldwide leader in aviation.
