Whispers of misfortune and resilience echo through the Klaterbuurt. This hamlet, nestled in the Beemster polder near Purmerend, holds a story as captivating as its name. Klaterbuurt, meaning “rattle,” speaks to a history interwoven with the sounds of both destruction and rebuilding. Klaterbuurt sits on the Westdijk along the Rijperweg, facing the village of De Rijp. In 1654, a devastating fire swept through De Rijp, consuming homes, businesses, and storehouses filled with hemp, tar, and oil. The inferno’s reach extended across the water to Klaterbuurt. A significant portion of the hamlet’s dwellings and farms succumbed to the flames, leaving a scar on the landscape. From the ashes, both De Rijp and Klaterbuurt began to rise again. However, the polder authorities decreed that the southern part of Klaterbuurt would not be rebuilt. This decision stemmed from the area’s reputation as a haven for vagrants, beggars, and thieves. The local messenger, Claas Jansz Hynis, announced the ban on October 13, 1654, halting any reconstruction efforts. This decree shaped Klaterbuurt’s destiny. It prevented the hamlet from growing into a larger village. Further expansion was curtailed in 1958 when the Provincial Planning Service designated the Beemster as a green buffer zone against encroaching urbanization. Klaterbuurt remains a small, quiet community, its history etched in the memories of fire and resilience. The hamlet stands as a testament to the power of nature and human decisions, a place where whispers of the past linger in the air.
