In 1966, amidst the post-war boom, the story of Kerkelanden began. This wasn’t a tale of grand castles or ancient ruins. Kerkelanden emerged from the growing needs of Hilversum, a planned neighborhood designed for modern living. Imagine a landscape dotted with humble huts and caravans, the last remnants of informal settlements. Children delighted as horses roamed freely through the budding streets, a scene soon to be replaced by the neat rows of houses characteristic of Kerkelanden today. Kerkelanden, meaning “church lands,” owes its name to the Grote Kerk in nearby Naarden. This historic connection whispers of a time before the bustling neighborhood, when the land belonged to the church. The church burned down in 1481, a dramatic event that echoes in the name of this now thriving community. Between 1967 and 1975, Kerkelanden took shape. Homes sprung up, mostly single-family dwellings nestled in cozy courtyards. High-rise apartment buildings, reaching up to fourteen stories, punctuated the skyline, particularly at the entrance of the neighborhood. A shopping center, opened in 1972, became the heart of daily life. A sports hall, tragically destroyed by fire in 2003, was reborn in a new location in 2007, demonstrating the resilience of this community. Kerkelanden is home to approximately 5,700 people, packed a bit more densely than other parts of Hilversum. Imagine a population density of 3,838 inhabitants per square kilometer in Kerkelanden, compared to 1,867 in the rest of Hilversum. Scattered throughout Kerkelanden, serene ponds offer a tranquil escape from the urban rhythm. One pond features a striking statue of a Siren, a mythical half-goddess, adding a touch of magic to the neighborhood. As you stand here, in the heart of Kerkelanden, take a moment to appreciate its journey. From open fields and scattered huts to a vibrant community, Kerkelanden’s story reflects the changing landscape of the Netherlands.
