Gazing upon the Kenau-Ripperda Statue, one might mistake them for a medieval Bonnie and Clyde. This imposing four-meter bronze sculpture dominates Haarlem Station Square. It captures the spirit of Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaar and Wigbolt Ripperda. The Kenau-Ripperda Statue was unveiled in 2016, a creation of the Haarlem-based French artist Graziella Curreli. It commemorates two figures pivotal to Haarlem’s history during the Eighty Years’ War. Kenau, a shipbuilder and timber merchant, is often associated with the city’s defense against the Spanish siege. Wigbolt Ripperda, a soldier in William of Orange’s army, fought alongside the people of Haarlem. The Kenau-Ripperda Statue symbolizes the courage and resilience of Haarlem’s citizens. For seven long months, they resisted the Spanish forces, using whatever means necessary, even boiling water and burning hay. This struggle culminated tragically on July 12, 1573, when Haarlem surrendered. While Kenau managed to escape, Ripperda met a grim fate. He was beheaded in the Grote Markt, along with hundreds of his comrades. The Kenau-Ripperda Statue serves as a poignant reminder of their sacrifice. It stands as a testament to a time when Haarlem’s residents fought fiercely for their city. The statue has faced its share of criticism. Some argue that Kenau’s depiction is too feminine, others that the statue itself is simply too large. Yet, its prominent location ensures that everyone passing through Haarlem Station Square encounters a piece of the city’s rich history.
