Deep in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, nestled amongst the dunes and trees, lies a secret world: Kabouterdorp De Zilk. Kabouterdorp De Zilk isn’t your average village. Its inhabitants are a whimsical community of gnomes, over 200 strong. They reside in a miniature town, complete with tiny houses, shops, and even a glijbaan (slide).

Kabouterdorp De Zilk’s story began in 1990 when a lone gnome, placed by a thoughtful boswachter (forest ranger), marked the village’s humble beginnings. Visitors, charmed by the solitary gnome, began bringing their own, creating a growing family of gnomes. This act of collective whimsy transformed a quiet corner of the dunes into a vibrant, magical village.

Kabouterdorp De Zilk has faced its share of adversity. In March 2020, vandals destroyed the beloved gnome village, leaving a void in the hearts of many. However, the community rallied, donating gnomes to rebuild this special place. The rebuilt Kabouterdorp De Zilk stands as a testament to the resilience and shared love for this magical world.

Finding Kabouterdorp De Zilk is an adventure in itself. It’s accessible via Ingang De Zilk, one of the four entrances to the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. From there, it’s a 1.2-kilometer walk, partially paved and partially unpaved, following the Nieuwe Haasvelderweg and venturing off the beaten path. There are no signs, but with Google Maps as your guide, and perhaps by following the sound of children’s laughter, you can discover this hidden gem. Once you spot a red pointed hat peeking from behind a dune, you know you’re close.

Kabouterdorp De Zilk isn’t just a collection of gnomes. It’s a dynamic place where children, often accompanied by their grandparents, interact with the gnome community. They rearrange the gnomes, creating new stories and adventures. While this can sometimes lead to accidental damage, it’s a testament to the interactive and engaging nature of the village. Remember to look up; you might find gnomes perched in the trees, adding another layer of magic to this enchanting world.

Visiting Kabouterdorp De Zilk requires an entrance fee to the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, a small price to pay for an unforgettable experience. It’s open from sunrise to sunset, giving you ample time to explore this magical place and the surrounding natural beauty of the dunes. Keep in mind, dogs aren’t allowed in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen, so leave your furry friends at home. As you leave Kabouterdorp De Zilk, carry the magic with you, knowing that you’ve experienced a unique and heartwarming piece of Dutch charm.
