Cruyff was a legendary Dutch footballer who passed away in 2016. The official name uses the original Dutch spelling of his name Cruijff to stay close to the Dutch Johan.
This is the home stadium of AFC Ajax since its opening. The Johan Cruijff ArenA has a retractable roof and a grass surface. The grass had problems growing in the shade of the open roof. It sometimes had to be replaced up to four times a year.
The Johan Cruijff ArenA hosted several major events. These include the UEFA Euro 2000. It also held the 1998 UEFA Champions League Final. Another major event was the 2013 UEFA Europa League Final. The stadium also hosted three group stage matches and one match in the round of 16 of the UEFA Euro 2020.
The stadium’s capacity varies. It holds 55,865 seats during football matches. For concerts with a center-stage setup, it can accommodate 68,000 people. End-stage concerts allow for 50,000 attendees. Concerts with the stage on the east side have a capacity of 35,000.
Many famous artists have performed here. Tina Turner, Coldplay and U2 have all graced this stage. The Rolling Stones, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have also performed here. The stadium was even considered for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Before its current name, it was also known as Stadion Amsterdam during the planning phase. Queen Beatrix opened the stadium on August 14, 1996. At the opening, she revealed the world’s largest painting, De Zee.
