In the 1960s, Jagersplas wasn’t a haven for birds. It was a sand excavation site. The digging revealed a hidden depth, now reaching 40 meters at Jagersplas’s center. This depth attracts fish-eating birds like Goosander and Smews. Jagersplas is more than just a large lake near Zaandam. It’s a testament to transformation. The area surrounding Jagersplas includes reedbeds, bushes, trees, and small forests. These areas teem with life. The reedbeds are a symphony of birdsong. Bearded Tits, Grasshopper Warblers, Savi’s Warblers, Cetti’s Warblers, and Bluethroats all call Jagersplas home. Even the elusive Great Bittern might make an appearance. In winter, the forests shelter flocks of Eurasian Siskins and Common Redpolls. While the lake itself may not always have large numbers of waterbirds, its depth attracts unusual visitors. Common Scoters, Greater Scaups, and Red-breasted Mergansers have all graced Jagersplas with their presence. Closer to the shore, Common Teals and Garganeys dabble in the shallows. Jagersplas is easily accessible thanks to paved trails that wind through the area. There are several parking areas available for visitors too. Jagersplas invites you to explore its reborn beauty. It is a place where industry once was. Now nature thrives.
