Behold the mathematical root sign come to life. This is the IT Centre of the University of Passau. Have you ever seen a building quite like it?

The IT Centre’s architecture is not just for show. It is a testament to thoughtful design integrating both form and function. Completed in 2005, the IT Centre emerged from an architectural competition. It was financed by the Bavarian High-Tech Campaign.

Notice how the building rests on nine-meter-high stilts facing the Inn River. This unique design gives the IT Centre a sense of lightness and transparency. The stilts serve a crucial purpose. They protect the building from flooding. The architects thoroughly considered energy efficiency and flood protection in their design.

Look closer at the base. The IT Centre stands on reinforced concrete columns. It also features a floodable underground garage as its base level. Where do you think the technology is housed?

The technology is housed on the roof. Interestingly, the server rooms are cooled using water drawn directly from the Inn River. This innovative approach highlights the IT Centre’s commitment to sustainability.

The IT Centre houses research institutes. Computer science and business informatics departments also call it home. Additionally, the International Office has rooms here.

From a bird’s eye view, the building’s floor plan truly stands out. It mimics the shape of a mathematical root sign. This design is a nod to the centre’s focus on technology and innovation.

The University of Passau received an award in 2009. It was named Germany’s most beautiful campus. As you can see, greenery abounds around the university buildings along the Inn River.

Just a short distance from here, the Innradweg bike path passes by. A two-kilometre ride upstream will take you into Austria via the Ingling barrage.

The IT Centre is more than just a building. It is a hub of innovation, research, and international collaboration. Its unique architecture reflects the forward-thinking spirit of the University of Passau. It is a place where technology and nature meet. It’s a place where ideas take root and flourish.
