Hidden in plain sight on Amsterdam’s Rokin, the Intersections Statue whispers stories of a queen and her city. This isn’t just any statue. The Intersections Statue captures Queen Wilhelmina in her youth, astride a horse, a vision of regal poise. Commissioned in 1964 by the Amsterdam Contact Group of Women’s Organisations, this bronze artwork was a gift from the people of Amsterdam to their beloved queen. Originally, the statue was meant to depict Queen Wilhelmina addressing the Dutch people via Radio Oranje during wartime. However, sculptor Theresia R. van der Pant envisioned something different. Knowing Wilhelmina’s daughter, Queen Juliana, had a keen eye for detail, Van der Pant sought her advice on the queen’s attire for the statue. This collaboration resulted in a more dynamic portrayal of a younger Wilhelmina. Interestingly, the Intersections Statue wasn’t always destined for Rokin. Its impressive size meant Damrak, the initial location, wouldn’t do it justice. It found its home here in 1972, a regal presence amongst the bustling shops and canals. The Intersections Statue offers a glimpse into Wilhelmina’s long reign, a testament to her connection with her people. It reminds us that history isn’t just made in grand halls but also in the intersections of art, public affection, and a sculptor’s vision.
