A local insurance scheme was created to allow fishermen to continue their work. The war created a fish shortage. Prices soared. In 1920 a second harbor the Haringhaven was constructed.

World War II saw IJmuiden Buitenhaven transformed into a military stronghold. The German navy stationed torpedo boats there. Massive bunkers were built. Schnellbootbunker 1 could house around ten torpedo boats. It was destroyed by bombing in 1944. A larger bunker Schnellbootbunker 2 survived. It’s still there today used by an offshore company.

IJmuiden Buitenhaven continued to develop after the war. The Haringhaven was lengthened. In 1989 the port authority was privatized. The IJmondhaven opened in 2005. It is 680 meters long. It is 120 meters wide. There are plans to reuse an old dredging depot as a harbor. This will accommodate larger ships.

Today IJmuiden Buitenhaven is bustling. It handles fish oil and gas and ferries to Newcastle. It remains a major fishing port. It is a vital part of the Netherlands’ economy.
