Tucked away within the Oosterdokskade 143, within the walls of Amsterdam’s Public Library, resides IHLIA LGBTI Heritage. IHLIA is more than just an archive. It’s a vibrant testament to LGBTQ+ history, a story whispered through over 100,000 voices. IHLIA, formerly known as the International Gay/Lesbian Information Center and Archive, stands as a beacon of LGBTQ+ history and culture. Right here, within these walls, lies the largest collection of its kind in all of Europe. Imagine 1,515 meters of shelf space overflowing with books, journals, films, posters, and even everyday objects like T-shirts and buttons. These artifacts, meticulously preserved, tell stories of love, struggle, and resilience, painting a vivid picture of the LGBTQ+ experience. IHLIA’s birth in 1999 marked a significant moment. It resulted from the fusion of three important entities: the Homodok (documentation on homosexuality from the University of Amsterdam), the Lesbian Archives of Leeuwarden (housed at the Anna Blamanhuis), and the Lesbisch Archief Amsterdam (LAA). IHLIA’s home within the Public Library is no accident. It underscores the importance of making these stories accessible to all. IHLIA is not just a repository of the past. It’s a living archive. Students, researchers, and anyone curious about LGBTQ+ history can access these materials. They can delve into the past, learn from it, and celebrate the journey towards a more inclusive future. Even if you’re not a researcher, you can still experience a piece of IHLIA’s magic. The special pink bookcase on the 3rd floor, filled with LGBTQ+ literature and films, is a testament to IHLIA’s commitment to visibility and accessibility. IHLIA’s mission is to make LGBTQ+ history and culture visible, accessible, and celebrated. IHLIA is more than an archive; it’s a living story. It’s a story waiting to be discovered, one artifact, one book, one film at a time.
