In the heart of IJmuiden, a story of steel unfolds at the Hoogovens Museum. The year is 1918. Koninklijke Nederlandsche Hoogovens en Staalfabrieken (KNHS) plants its roots, destined to become a titan of industry. The Hoogovens Museum, housed within a former bathhouse for steelworkers, now echoes with the clang of history rather than the shouts of laborers. It opened its doors in 2009, thanks to the Stichting Industrieel Erfgoed Hoogovens (SIEHO), preserving the legacy of Tata Steel IJmuiden. Here, the saga of Dutch steelmaking comes alive, spanning over a century. The museum chronicles the evolution of KNHS, from its inception to its transformations into Hoogovens Estel, Hoogovens Groep, Corus Staal, and finally, Tata Steel. Models of factories and equipment fill the space, alongside hundreds of artifacts. Photos, films, and animations weave a tapestry of steel, capturing the human story behind the metal. Outside, the museum’s outdoor exhibition showcases the tools of the trade: massive ingot molds, ladles, and even a blast furnace top. Inside, a timeline stretches from 1917 to the present day. It marks pivotal moments like the establishment of the company’s fire brigade and pension fund, and the commissioning of the casting-rolling mill. Scale models of continuous annealing lines and blast furnaces 4 and 5 capture the eye. Full-scale models of blast furnace 3 and a cold rolling mill stand as testaments to engineering ingenuity. A model railway depicts the vital role of rail transport in the steel industry. A slice of steel, its dimensions mirroring a true slab, hangs suspended from the ceiling. The Hoogovens Museum stands as a proud member of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage. It’s a vital link in the HollandRoute, a network of industrial heritage sites, weaving together a story of trade, industry, technology, and human endeavor. The Hoogovens Museum isn’t just a museum.
