Did ‘t Hoog- en Groenland windmill always stand so serenely against the Dutch sky? ‘t Hoog- en Groenland, a poldermolen, is more than just a picturesque landmark north of Baambrugge. This eight-sided, bovenkruier (a type of windmill where the entire top rotates) whispers tales of a time when wind powered the land. ‘t Hoog- en Groenland, likely built around 1680, diligently drained not one, but several polders: Hoogland, Groenland, Roode Molen, and Donkervliet. Imagine the rhythmic creaking of its sails as it battled the waters, a constant companion to the farmers of Baambrugge. For nearly 250 years, ‘t Hoog- en Groenland performed this vital task. Then, in 1925, progress intervened. The old gears and mechanisms within were removed, replaced by the hum of an electric pump. The wind’s work was done, or so it seemed. Though silenced, ‘t Hoog- en Groenland was not forgotten. In 1966, the Stichting De Utrechtse Molens recognized its value. They took ownership, ensuring its preservation. Just two years later, the electric pump fell silent, and ‘t Hoog- en Groenland stood still once more. But this was not the end. A loving restoration in 1971 and 1972 breathed new life into the old mill. Today, ‘t Hoog- en Groenland’s 22.40-meter roeden, fitted with the traditional Oudhollands wieksysteem and sails, can be seen turning once again, thanks to the dedicated volunteer millers who call it home. While the interior remains private, the sight of ‘t Hoog- en Groenland against the sky is a testament to the enduring spirit of Dutch ingenuity. It reminds us that even in the face of progress, the stories of the past, like the wind, can still whisper through the present.
