Imagine wealthy Amsterdam families escaping the city’s stench. They longed for fresh air. They found solace at hoofdgebouw Leyduin. This is hoofdgebouw Leyduin. It stands as a testament to centuries of history and transformation.
Leyduin started as a simple farm in 1596. Over time it evolved into a grand estate. Wealthy owners expanded and beautified it. The Van Loon family added a French-style Patte d’oie in the 18th century. They also built a large hill with a Belvedere. This offered stunning views. A waterfall cascaded through the grounds.
In 1797, Leyduin boasted a mansion, coach house, and various amenities. These included a billiard room, menagerie, and even a hermitage. However, the original mansion was torn down in 1803. The current hoofdgebouw Leyduin was built in 1920. Dorhout Mees commissioned it.
The Van Lennep family played a crucial role in Amsterdam’s water supply. They allowed parts of Leyduin to be used for water extraction. This supplied clean drinking water to Amsterdam. Before that, the city’s water was heavily polluted. It caused outbreaks of diseases. Jacob van Lennep proposed using fresh water from the dunes. In 1853, Amsterdam began receiving clean water.
Around 1900, Leyduin featured a walled kitchen garden. Some of its walls and sheds still exist. Today, the “Nieuwe Akker” uses the garden for organic farming.
In 1919 and 1920, Leyduin was divided into three parts. These became Leyduin, Vinkenduin, and Koekoeksduin. Leonard Springer designed gardens for Leyduin and Vinkenduin. Since World War II, hoofdgebouw Leyduin has served various purposes. It was a girls’ boarding school and a training institute. Now, it is a private residence.
The landscape around hoofdgebouw Leyduin features both hilly dunes and open meadows. The Leybeek stream connects these areas. It flows through the property. A cascade adds to its charm.
Landschap Noord-Holland acquired Leyduin in 1996. They are working to restore its former glory. The gardens around hoofdgebouw Leyduin are being revitalized. This will recreate a harmonious blend of architecture and nature.
