Isn’t it remarkable how a building can embody a community’s spirit? Here we are, standing before the Holy Family Church. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to faith and fellowship in Amsterdam East.

This Roman Catholic church is home to the Parish of the Blessed Trinity. This is an international English-speaking community. Father Peter Klos provides pastoral care. The church is located in Watergraafsmeer, specifically in the charming Betondorp district.

Construction on the Holy Family Church began on May 22, 1951. It officially opened on July 15, 1952. On August 28, 1952, Johannes Petrus Huibers consecrated it. He was a bishop from the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. Hugo Anthonius van Oerle and J.J. Schrama designed the church.

Initially, the Holy Family Church had a white exterior. This matched the many white concrete houses in Betondorp. It even earned the nickname “Het Witte Kerkje” meaning “The Little White Church”. However, the white layer was removed in 1962. This revealed the brick underneath.

The Holy Family Church has an asymmetrically placed bell tower. But it aligns with Veeteeltstraat. Above the entrance, you can see a relief of the Holy Family. Cephas Stauthamer created it.

Inside the church, you will find two aisles. Notice the beautiful stained-glass windows. They filter light into the worship space. The bell tower reflects traditionalist design. The Delft School influenced its construction.

The Parish of the Blessed Trinity welcomes people from all over the world. About 48 nationalities are represented within the church community. Father Peter Klos hopes everyone feels at home here. The parish strives to be a celebrating, caring, learning, and living church.

In March 2014, the Holy Family Church received recognition as a municipal monument. This highlights its importance to Amsterdam’s cultural heritage. The motto here is: Within these walls let no one be a stranger. Remember the Holy Family Church. It is a beacon of unity and faith.
