Fifty florins and a trunk full of belongings. That’s what it took to live in the Hofje van Staats. Imagine the lives of those women.

The Hofje van Staats in Haarlem isn’t just a pretty courtyard. It’s a snapshot of 18th-century life. It tells a story of legacy and charity. It was built between 1730 and 1733. Ysbrand Staats a thread-seller left his fortune to the poor. His brother oversaw construction. The architect Abraham Kleijn even visited Alkmaar for inspiration. They studied the then new style of hofjes. These weren’t hidden away. They stood proudly on the street.

This Hofje van Staats was quite luxurious. The original gateway house remains. It’s grander than its Alkmaar inspiration. It was later surpassed in grandeur by the Teylers Hofje. But the Hofje van Staats held a special place. It housed women of the Dutch Reformed faith. These women weren’t destitute. The rules required possessions. They needed clothing and furnishings. The Hofje van Staats initially accommodated 29 women. After renovations in 1990 it housed 20.

The Hofje van Staats was wealthy. In 1783 it celebrated its 50th anniversary. Regents received engraved glasses featuring Ysbrand Staats’ portrait. The Hofje even had bleaching fields and a riverside pavilion. The ladies enjoyed tea by the Spaarne river. Financial difficulties arose during the French occupation. The extra land was sadly sold.

Today we stand before the Hofje van Staats. Picture its history. The lives of the women who lived within its walls. Their possessions. Their faith. Their community. This peaceful courtyard speaks volumes. It’s a testament to one man’s generosity and a unique piece of Dutch history. Remember the 50 florins. It’s more than just money. It represents a community a life and a legacy. The Hofje van Staats is a reminder of the past. It lives on in this quiet place.
