Ysbrand Staats a thread-seller left his fortune to the poor. His brother oversaw construction. The architect Abraham Kleijn even visited Alkmaar for inspiration. This Hofje van Staats was quite luxurious. The original gateway house remains. It’s grander than its Alkmaar inspiration. It was later surpassed in grandeur by the Teylers Hofje. The Hofje even had bleaching fields and a riverside pavilion. The ladies enjoyed tea by the Spaarne river. Financial difficulties arose during the French occupation. The extra land was sadly sold.
