What secrets whisper behind these walls? Before us stands the Hofje van Guurtje de Waal, a charming courtyard tucked away in the heart of Haarlem. It’s a place where time seems to slow down, a peaceful oasis amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. Hofje van Guurtje de Waal, established in 1616, has a rich and fascinating history. It was founded by Guurtje de Waal, daughter of a wealthy textile merchant, for women of the Dutch Reformed faith. Originally built on her own property, the Hofje started with six small houses. This quiet haven offered shelter and community to widows and single women, often overlooked in society. Guurtje herself oversaw the Hofje for its first twelve years, ensuring it ran smoothly and adhered to its charitable purpose. In 1661, Guurtje’s cousin, Jan de Waal, who served as Haarlem’s mayor, expanded the Hofje. He added two more houses, bringing the total to eight. He also commissioned the distinctive gateway, proudly displaying the de Waal family crest. This crest, a rather striking image of a headless lion spouting blood, adds an intriguing layer to the Hofje’s story. The Hofje van Guurtje de Waal continued to evolve over time. It underwent renovations in 1783, modernizing some of its features. More recently, in the 1980s, the eight small houses were combined to create four larger dwellings. Though technically no longer a traditional hofje, Hofje van Guurtje de Waal retains its historical charm and peaceful atmosphere. Today, managed by the housing corporation Ymere, it continues to provide homes within this unique historical setting. The Hofje van Guurtje de Waal stands as a testament to the enduring power of philanthropy and the importance of community. It reminds us that even within bustling cities, pockets of tranquility and historical significance can be found.
