Stepping through the unassuming gateway of Hodshon-Dedelhof, we’re transported back to 1842. Imagine Amsterdam in the 19th century, a city of canals and burgeoning trade. Hodshon-Dedelhof stands as a testament to a different kind of legacy, one of quiet philanthropy and family ties. This hofje, a courtyard surrounded by small residences, was established by Isaac Hodshon and his wife, Isabella Dedel. Atop the gate, their combined family crest proudly announces the founders of this haven. The couple, unable to have children of their own, chose to create a home for elderly women, preferably those who had served their family. This explains the intimate, almost secretive nature of Hodshon-Dedelhof. A high wall shields the courtyard from the bustling street, creating a sense of peace and seclusion. The original layout included twenty small homes and a larger residence for a caretaker couple. Today, after renovations by Stadsherstel, twelve modernized homes remain. The renovation maintained the historic character while updating the homes for modern living. Now, single women over sixty find solace within these walls. Look around the courtyard. The original pump, adorned with a dolphin-supported lantern, still stands. The former “poephuisjes,” or outhouses, now serve as storage spaces. What is now a garden, once served as a “bleekveld.” Here, residents laid their laundry to dry and whiten in the Amsterdam sun. In the tympanum, under the roof’s ridge, a unique clock with a single hand marks the passage of time. Hodshon-Dedelhof embodies a quiet history, a story of family, philanthropy, and the enduring spirit of Amsterdam’s hofjes.
