In 1305, a humble settlement nestled among the rolling hills of the Gooi region first appeared in official records. It was called “Hilfersheem,” a name derived from “Hilvertshem,” meaning “houses between the hills.” This marks the earliest documented mention of Hilversum. Hilversum wasn’t always the bustling media city we know today. For centuries, it was a quiet farming village. The inhabitants, known as Erfgooiers, raised sheep and cows on the shared heathlands and meadows. They cultivated rye, barley, and later, buckwheat, a grain that still graces Hilversum’s coat of arms. The transformation began in the 17th century with a vital connection to the national water network. The Gooise Vaart, a canal initially dug to provide sand for Amsterdam’s canal belt, linked Hilversum to ‘s Gravelandse Vaart. This connection opened up trade routes to Amsterdam, boosting Hilversum’s textile industry. Hilversum became known for its innovations in spinning and weaving, even gaining international acclaim. By 1772, the village boasted 42 textile manufacturers. The arrival of the railway in 1874 marked another pivotal moment. Wealthy Amsterdammers, initially drawn to Hilversum for its tranquil summer retreats, began settling permanently. Hilversum’s rise as the “media city” of the Netherlands began in the early 20th century with the establishment of the Nederlandse Seintoestellen Fabriek (NSF). This company, initially founded to produce signaling devices for ships, started manufacturing radios in the 1920s. To boost sales, NSF began broadcasting music from their factory, marking Hilversum’s first foray into broadcasting. Existing broadcasters, keen to expand their reach, saw the technical expertise of NSF and began renting studio space in the factory. This led to a concentration of broadcasting activities in Hilversum, solidifying its status as the media capital of the Netherlands. Hilversum, once a quiet village of shepherds and weavers, evolved into a vibrant hub of media and communication, its history echoing through the airwaves.
