Hidden within Amsterdam’s vibrant heart lies Het Veem Theater, a place where whispers of the past intertwine with the vibrant pulse of contemporary performance. Het Veem Theater isn’t just any theater. It’s a unique space, a converted warehouse in a former shipyard, echoing with the ghosts of maritime trade and the clatter of industry. Originally called the Klapmutsenveem, built in 1895, this building on the then-Barentskade (now Van Diemenstraat and Oude Houthaven) held coffee, cacao, and general cargo. Its name changed in 1898 to Oranje Nassau Veem, commemorating Queen Wilhelmina’s coronation. In the summer of 1981, Het Veem, along with its twin warehouse added in 1908, was taken over by squatters, a bold act that paved the way for its transformation. After years of negotiation, the newly formed association acquired the interconnected buildings for a symbolic 1 guilder. It was here, amidst the raw, industrial space, that Het Veem Theater was born. Sjoerd Schwibettus and Gail Dockery, the theater’s founders and artistic directors, envisioned a space where mime and movement could flourish. Their own mime company, Stichting Bewegingsstudio Amsterdam, became the resident performers. Het Veem Theater officially opened its doors on November 7, 1981. Het Veem Theater is more than a stage; it’s a production house, a workshop, a laboratory, and a center of expertise for contemporary mime theater. It’s the only stage in the Netherlands dedicated solely to mime and related theatrical forms. Het Veem Theater nurtures both emerging and established artists, fostering a dynamic environment for creative exploration. In 2014, Het Veem Theater underwent a transformation, becoming Veem House for Performance, solidifying its role as an international co-production platform. While the name changed, the essence remains: a haven for innovative performance, a space where the unspoken finds its voice.
