Seven meters of aluminum stare down at us. This is Het Mannetje van Hoofddorp. He stands tall in Hoofddorp’s center. He observes the bustling shoppers below. He’s a silent witness to the Friday market’s vibrant chaos. Het Mannetje van Hoofddorp isn’t your typical statue. He resembles a giant pebble figure. A child might build one at the beach. He is made of 22 polished aluminum pieces. Children are often tempted to climb him. His smooth surface makes the climb almost impossible. Officially, he’s called “Standing Man”. He arrived in Hoofddorp in 2006. He marked the completion of Hoofddorp’s new city center. Het Mannetje van Hoofddorp quickly became a local icon. Some adore him. Others, not so much. The artist behind this figure is Tom Claassen. He is known for his simplified human and animal forms. He also created the concrete elephants along the A6 highway. He’s responsible for the reclining men in the Kröller-Müller Museum’s sculpture garden. Claassen’s work is found throughout the Netherlands. He has won several awards for his unique style. Another Claassen sculpture resides in Haarlemmermeer. A bronze deer graces the Herfstpark in Nieuw-Vennep. Back to Het Mannetje van Hoofddorp. He stands as a testament to modern art’s power. He sparks conversations, and provokes thought. He’s more than just metal. He is a symbol of Hoofddorp itself.
