Tucked away in Amsterdam’s Begijnhof, the Hervormde Kerk holds centuries of stories within its ancient walls. The Hervormde Kerk isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to resilience, a beacon of faith that has weathered storms, both literal and metaphorical, since the 14th century. The Begijnhof itself, not a typical retirement home but more a community of independent women, the Beguines, adds another layer to the story. These women, dedicated to chastity but free to leave and marry, worshipped here. During the Reformation in 1578, while other religious institutions were shuttered, the Begijnhof and its hidden church remained. This tolerance reflects Amsterdam’s pragmatic approach, overlooking practices that didn’t disrupt public order. In 1607, the city granted the “disused” church to English-speaking Presbyterians, a mix of merchants and religious exiles. This marked a turning point for the Hervormde Kerk. It became a haven for English worship in the heart of Amsterdam. The Hervormde Kerk, also known as the Engelse Kerk, flourished, except for a brief pause during World War II. Today, it stands as an international church, welcoming people from all walks of life. The building itself has undergone transformations over the centuries. Fires in 1421 and 1452 caused significant damage. The current structure was completed in 1492, possibly incorporating the older tower from 1417. A southern aisle was added in the 1670s to accommodate the growing congregation. Restorations in 1912 and 1976 further shaped its form. Inside, you’ll find a 17th-century pulpit. A brass lectern, a gift from King William and Queen Mary Stuart in 1689, graces the pulpit. The rococo-style organ casing from 1753 adds to the rich interior. The stained-glass main window honors the Pilgrim Fathers, who found refuge in Amsterdam before their journey to America. The church’s connection to Scotland adds another dimension. The minister has traditionally come from Scotland, linking the Hervormde Kerk to the Church of Scotland’s Presbytery of Europe. As you stand before the Hervormde Kerk, remember its journey. It’s a story of adaptation and perseverance, a hidden gem in the vibrant tapestry of Amsterdam.
