“Hear God’s Voice.” That’s what the founders of the Hervormde Gemeente sought. This religious building stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s complex religious history. It shows how faith shaped the city.

The Hervormde Gemeente emerged from a desire to unite different Protestant denominations. The name itself reflects this. “Hervormd” refers to the mainstream Dutch Reformed Church. “Gereformeerd” points to the Reformed Churches in the Netherlands. The goal was a unified national Protestant church.

Imagine Amsterdam in the early 20th century. Religious tensions simmered. The Hervormde Gemeente Staatspartij, or HGS, arose in this environment. It was an orthodox Protestant party. They championed strong nationalist ideals. Anti-Catholicism was a core belief. They envisioned the Netherlands as a Protestant nation. This nation would be rooted in biblical principles.

The HGS identified with the Geuzen. These Protestant resisters fought against Catholic Spaniards. The party saw the emancipation of Dutch Catholics as a threat. They feared a Catholic takeover. The party viewed the 1886 Dutch Reformed Church split as weakening Protestant power.

Casper Lingbeek was a key figure. He led the HGS. The party won one seat in the 1925 election. Lingbeek occupied that seat. He later stepped down. But supporters asked him to return.

The HGS faced isolation. Other Protestant parties distanced themselves. Hendrikus Colijn appealed to their voters. The National Socialist Movement attracted some party members. The party lacked a strong support system. They failed to win a seat in 1937.

After World War II, former members formed the Protestant Union. It included ex-members of the CHU. They contested the 1946 election. But they failed to win seats.

The HGS interpreted the Ten Commandments strictly. They rejected “false gods”. These included capitalism, democracy, and socialism. The party opposed government control. This included compulsory voting and social security.

The Hervormde Gemeente’s story reflects a specific time. It shows religious and political currents. It reminds us of Amsterdam’s diverse past. The church continues to be a place of gathering. It stands as a landmark in Amsterdam. It embodies a unique chapter in the city’s story. It is a place where faith and community intertwine.
