Almost a century of education echoes within these walls. Let’s explore the Hervormd Lyceum Zuid. This school has a rich history. It began in 1928. By 1934, the school moved to this very building.

The Hervormd Lyceum Zuid quickly grew. By 1940, it was the largest secondary school in the Netherlands. Imagine over 800 students bustling through its halls. That’s a lot of teenagers.

However, the school’s history isn’t without its shadows. During World War II, the rector was a member of the NSB. This dark chapter reminds us of the complexities of history. It shows that even educational institutions weren’t immune to the war’s impact.

The Hervormd Lyceum Zuid faced overcrowding issues after the war. The building was designed for a maximum number of students. Space became a premium. In 2005, the school underwent significant renovations. Two underground gymnasiums were added to the former courtyard. This expansion provided much-needed space.

Today, the Hervormd Lyceum Zuid collaborates with other schools. These include Jewish and Protestant Christian schools in Amsterdam and Amstelland. This collaboration focuses on organization, finances, and staffing. The Hervormd Lyceum Zuid is part of the Ceder Group. This group includes Hervormd Lyceum West. It also includes Christelijke Scholengemeenschap Buitenveldert, Hermann Wesselink College and Veenlanden College.

The Hervormd Lyceum Zuid is led by a rector and two conrectors. The faculty consists of about 70 teachers. These educators guide students toward their future.

Many notable people have walked these halls. Some famous alumni of Hervormd Lyceum Zuid include Hans van der Molen. He is the CEO of Berenschot Groep B.V. Roderick Veelo is a Dutch journalist. Simone Walraven is a Dutch TV personality. Piet Beertema is an internet pioneer. The writer Mano Bouzamour also attended this school. These alumni represent the diverse paths that students can take.

The Hervormd Lyceum Zuid stands as a testament to the power of education. It has evolved. It adapted to changing times. It continues to shape young minds in Amsterdam. Its location is on Brahmsstraat. Its side faces Schuberstraat. The back of the school is on Chopinstraat. This is where education meets history.
