Why a bridge named after Henk Sneevliet? The Henk Sneevlietbrug carries a name steeped in revolutionary history. This bridge, spanning the Henk Sneevlietweg, commemorates a man who dedicated his life to social and political change. Henk Sneevliet, born in Rotterdam in 1883, was a Dutch communist politician and a key figure in the early communist movements in Indonesia and China. He co-founded the Indies Social Democratic Association in 1914, laying the groundwork for the Indonesian communist movement. Sneevliet even played a role in the formation of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. Back in the Netherlands, he founded the Revolutionary Socialist Party, fighting for workers’ rights and against fascism. His activism landed him in prison in 1933 for supporting sailors who mutinied on the warship “De Zeven Provinciën”. Despite imprisonment, he was elected to the Dutch parliament that same year. During World War II, Sneevliet actively resisted the Nazi occupation. He co-founded the Marx-Lenin-Luxemburg Front, an underground resistance group. Tragically, he was captured and executed by the Nazis in 1942. The Henk Sneevlietbrug stands not just as a pathway, but as a symbol of his unwavering commitment to his ideals. It’s a reminder of a life devoted to fighting for a better world, even in the face of adversity.
