Whispers of healing carried on the wind. Heiligenbrunn. The name itself evokes a sense of sanctity. This is no ordinary place. This is a centuries-old pilgrimage site a testament to faith and the enduring power of hope.

For hundreds of years people have flocked to Heiligenbrunn drawn to its miraculous spring. Legend speaks of a farmer’s daughter cured of epilepsy by its waters. Her grateful father built the first wooden chapel. Heiligenbrunn’s history is intertwined with stories of divine intervention and unwavering devotion.

The initial wooden structure was replaced with a more substantial building around 1676. But its story is not without conflict. In 1803 during the secularization the pilgrimage was forbidden. The chapel was torn down. The spring was drained. Imagine the heartbreak of the faithful. Two hundred and eighty-eight votive tablets two hundred wax offerings and numerous crutches were confiscated. Yet the spirit of Heiligenbrunn endured.

Despite the ban pilgrims returned. Thousands thronged the site on July 2 1803 the Feast of the Visitation of Mary. Military intervention was necessary to enforce the prohibition. This only partially succeeded. By 1818 a new wooden chapel stood once more and the spring flowed again.

Heiligenbrunn’s popularity waned in the first half of the 20th century. After World War II however surrounding communities revived the pilgrimage. On February 7 1964 a building committee was formed. Their mission was to create a new chapel and a more fitting setting for the sacred spring.

Architect Adolf Hiendl of Passau designed a stunning new granite chapel. This was completed in August 1964. The water’s unique properties soft and perfect for tea and coffee add to its allure. Interestingly it’s not declared potable. This avoids designating the area a water protection zone. The farmer who works the nearby land avoids fertilizer and intensive farming in return for this privilege. Water quality reports are publicly displayed.

Anni Oettinger a woman of remarkable faith tirelessly collected donations for the new Heiligenbrunn. She faced skepticism but persevered. Her dedication is a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of this sacred place. Heiligenbrunn is more than just a spring. It’s a beacon of hope a testament to faith and a place where legends live on.
