Anno 1935. Etched into the granite. A silent testament on the Hartmanbrug. This unassuming bridge in Amsterdam-Oost spans the Ringvaart. It connects the Indische Buurt and the Watergraafsmeer. More than just concrete and steel. The Hartmanbrug whispers stories. Stories of protests and plans. In 1927 a wooden emergency bridge was proposed. Residents of the Celebesstraat protested. They wanted a bridge aligned with their street. The city council relented. Years of debate ensued. Finally in 1932 a design emerged. Piet Kramer’s Amsterdamse School style prevailed. Brick and natural stone. A blend of practicality and artistry. The bridge was built for 26000 guilders. It opened in 1936. A grand structure with intricate brickwork. Even the balustrades boast the artistry. Notice the slightly off-kilter balustrades. The granite blocks within remain level. A subtle detail. The Hartmanbrug originally had wide sidewalks. Later they were converted into bike lanes. The entire bridge rests on a wooden pile foundation. It wasn’t until 2007 that the bridge received its name. A tribute to Andre Hartman. A local shopkeeper. He was tragically killed during a robbery in 1993. His widow unveiled the bridge’s nameplate on the sixth of November 2007. A fitting memorial. The GVB bus lines 40 and 65 still cross the Hartmanbrug daily. A quiet hum of city life. A constant flow of vehicles and people. The Hartmanbrug. A silent witness to Amsterdam’s past and present. A bridge that connects more than just neighborhoods. It connects memories and stories. More than just a passage. A tribute to a life.
