Contemplate this: what began as a haven for elderly women has transformed into Amsterdam’s vibrant H’ART Museum. This art museum stands proudly on the Amstel River’s edge. It welcomes you to explore its rich history and diverse exhibitions.

Once known as the Hermitage Amsterdam, the H’ART Museum has a compelling story. The building itself, the Amstelhof, dates back to 1681. It first opened in 1682 as the Diaconie Oude Vrouwen Huys. This translates to Deanery Home for Old Women. For centuries, it served as a home for the elderly. Both men and women resided here from 1817. It was then renamed Diaconie Oude Vrouwen- en Mannenhuis meaning Deanery Home for Old Men and Women. The name Amstelhof, or Amstel Court, was first used in 1953.

By the 1990s, the facility no longer met the residents’ modern needs. Operators sought a new location. They offered the historic Amstelhof to Amsterdam. The city then leased it to the museum. The last residents departed in 2007. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev inaugurated the museum on June 20, 2009. It opened to the public the next day.

During its time as the Amstelhof, the building underwent several renovations. Wings were added to create more space. Consequently, little of the original interior remained when museum work began. Some areas were restored to their former glory. Many walls were removed to reconfigure spaces for the museum’s needs. These renovations cost €40 million.

Initially, the museum was a satellite of the Hermitage Museum of Saint Petersburg. However, in March 2022, it severed ties due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. From September 1, 2023, it became known as the H’ART Museum. This marked a new chapter.

Now, the H’ART Museum collaborates with major institutions. These include the Smithsonian, the Centre Pompidou, and the British Museum. Together, they present world-class exhibitions.

In 2023 and 2024, visitors could explore “Julius Caesar I came, I saw, I met my doom”. This exhibition offered insights into the life and legacy of the Roman emperor.

The H’ART Museum doesn’t have a permanent collection. Instead, it focuses on temporary exhibitions. These exhibitions showcase a wide range of art. They aim to inspire and educate visitors. Previous exhibitions included “The Immortal Alexander the Great” and “Matisse to Malevich Pioneers of Modern Art from the Hermitage”. “Jewels The Glitter of the Russian Court” celebrated ten years of educating the Dutch public about the collections in St. Petersburg.

Located on the Amstel River, the H’ART Museum is easily accessible. You can reach it by metro, tram, or even boat. The Waterlooplein station is nearby. Tram lines 9 and 14 also stop close to the museum.

As you leave the H’ART Museum, consider its journey. From a home for the elderly to a center for art and culture, it embodies Amsterdam’s dynamic spirit. The H’ART Museum invites you to return. Discover new exhibitions. Experience the transformative power of art.
