Is justice a game? Here at Hammerstein Advocaten N.V., the pursuit of justice is a calling. It is a complex and fascinating world where truth and advocacy intertwine.

Hammerstein Advocaten N.V. stands as a testament to a distinguished career in Dutch law. Oscar Hammerstein, born in Rotterdam in 1954, is the name behind this practice. He is a former Dutch lawyer with a colourful past.

Hammerstein’s journey began in Leiden. He studied law there at the encouragement of his father. He graduated in 1981 specializing in civil law. He started his career at Blackstone, Rueb & Van Boeschoten.

In 1994, Hammerstein faced a challenging period. He was arrested on suspicion of involvement in money laundering for a criminal. Though he spent six weeks in jail, the courts ultimately acquitted him on all charges.

A bizarre twist of fate occurred in November 1994. A bomb exploded under artist Rob Scholte’s car. Some theorized the attack was meant for Hammerstein. He drove a similar car. This theory was never confirmed. The investigation stalled.

Despite these challenges, Hammerstein’s career continued. In 2000, he partnered with Gerard Spong to start a law firm. He also became involved in the World Online case. This involved Nina Brink and a troubled IPO.

Hammerstein even sued journalists and politicians after Pim Fortuyn’s murder. He claimed they demonized Fortuyn. The court rejected his complaint. He co-authored a book about it with Spong.

In 2011, Spong and Hammerstein parted ways. Hammerstein then established Hammerstein Advocaten N.V. on the Herengracht.

However, more legal battles followed. Riny Schreijenberg seized Hammerstein’s assets claiming damages. The court initially awarded Schreijenberg some damages. But it ultimately dismissed all claims.

In 2014, Hammerstein published a book. It detailed his life, his HIV diagnosis, and his legal career. He alleged that Fred Teeven and Martin Witteveen falsified evidence to arrest him.

Hammerstein was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau in 2015. In 2021, he became Nabil B.’s anonymous lawyer in the Marengo trial. He retired from his active legal career that same year. Later, the Council of Discipline struck Hammerstein from the roll of lawyers. This followed complaints including one from Peter R. de Vries.

Hammerstein’s career had many facets. He also served as chairman of the Coornhert League. This is an association for penal reform.

The story of Hammerstein is more than dates and legal battles. It shows the resilience, controversies, and complexities of a life in law. It highlights the trials and tribulations that shape a career. It embodies the spirit of Amsterdam’s legal landscape.
