Have you heard of the Haidenhof? It’s a lovely area, not far from the beautiful city centre of Passau. It was once a little village, a real gem nestled among the rolling hills and forests. It even had its own castle! It’s actually where the area got its name, this Haidenhof. People have lived here for a long, long time. The Haidenhof castle was built in 1685 by a Domherr, who was a special kind of priest, Vigil Graf von Thun. He didn’t just want a simple castle though, he wanted one that would be used for hunting. It was redesigned later, by a man named Johann Georg Hagenauer, for a different Domherr named Leopold Freiherr von Hanxleden. In 1855, the little village of Haidenhof broke away from its neighbour, St. Nikola, to become its own community. It wasn’t for long though, because in 1909, it was merged with the city of Passau. The merging increased the size of the city of Passau by 1,720 people, making it the second biggest city in Niederbayern at the time. Despite its short life as a separate community, Haidenhof made a big impact on the area. Today, the former castle stands as a reminder of the rich history of Haidenhof.
