It’s a time capsule, taking us back to 1631. That makes it the oldest tow-canal in Holland. It drastically reduced the travel time. Before the Haarlemmertrekvaart, boats had to navigate the winding Spaarne River and pass through a narrow sluice gate at Spaarndam to reach the IJ. The canal sliced through the landscape in an almost perfectly straight line, ensuring the quickest possible journey. The Haarlemmertrekvaart was a lifeline. The first trekschuit in 1632 could carry 30 passengers. Interestingly, commercial freight wasn’t allowed. A complex tax system kept the trekschuit system a reliable mode of passenger transport for centuries. The journey wasn’t always seamless though. The canal was interrupted by a sluice gate between the Haarlem Lake and the IJ. Passengers had to disembark and change boats at the halfway point. This is how the town of Halfweg, literally meaning “halfway,” came into existence. The Haarlemmertrekvaart’s legacy extends beyond transport. Its construction led to the creation of the Haarlemmerweg, initially a towpath which was later paved. The canal continued to serve the community even after the arrival of the railway in 1839, playing a vital role in water management. Though the trekschuiten are gone, the Haarlemmertrekvaart remains a tranquil reminder of a bygone era. It is a testament to human ingenuity.
