“Does anyone know why this hamlet is called Haaldersbroek?” I ask, gesturing to the quaint collection of houses before us. Haaldersbroek is a hidden gem nestled in Zaanstad. It offers a glimpse into the past. This charming hamlet boasts a rich history dating back to the late 14th century.

Haaldersbroek gets its name from a swamp. This swamp is now part of the Kalverpolder. Imagine this area centuries ago. It was a marshy landscape that shaped the lives of its early inhabitants.

The oldest house in Haaldersbroek dates back to 1661. Just picture it. This house stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the community. It was once a fishing village. Today Haaldersbroek is home to around 150 people.

Let’s wander through the heart of Haaldersbroek. We will explore its two main streets. These are Haaldersbroek and Haaldersbroekerdwarsstraat. Notice how they are largely car-free. This adds to the peaceful atmosphere. The Braakdijk is often considered part of the hamlet too.

This area is a protected village scene. It is located within the National Landscape Laag Holland. Admire the traditional stolpboerderijen. These are the distinctive farmhouse with a pyramid roof. Spot the characteristic wooden drawbridges and the old Zaan houses.

Did you know that Haaldersbroek 11 is the oldest house? It dates back to 1661. The owner restored it around 1970. They reinstated the death door and the door calf. In 1974, it received monument status. Also, the house at Haaldersbroek 23 dates from 1682.

The name Haaldersbroek refers to the Broekland in Haler. Haler is a quarter that is now the Kalverpolder. Residents were initially involved in livestock farming and fishing. The industrialization of the Zaanstreek brought some changes.

In the years before the Eighty Years’ War, Haaldersbroek offered a safe haven for the Anabaptists. They were facing severe persecution. Claes Noome was a farmer, weaver, and Anabaptist preacher from Oostzaan. He was arrested in 1543 for owning a Bible. He escaped from prison. He died shortly after at his home in Haaldersbroek.

During the Eighty Years’ War, Haaldersbroek faced challenges. The Dutch built a sconce at ‘t Kalf in 1573. Spanish troops occupied Westzaan in 1574. Some residents found refuge in Haaldersbroek.

Haaldersbroek remained a Catholic enclave for a long time. In 1730, a Roman Catholic hidden church was built. The hidden church at ‘t Kalf had become too small. People from Zaandijk and Koog aan de Zaan also visited it. This church existed until 1887. The new Catholic church at ‘t Kalf was consecrated then.

In the mid-20th century, there was a plan to expand Haaldersbroek into a large new district. A secondary school was built in 1956. However, the new construction plan was moved to ‘t Kalf. Instead of the new district, the Zaanse Schans was created. It was built west of Haaldersbroek between 1961 and 1974. The intention was to preserve historical heritage.

Haaldersbroek stands as a reminder of simpler times. Its well-preserved houses and tranquil atmosphere offer a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Take a moment to appreciate the unique charm of this historic hamlet. Let it transport you back to a bygone era in the Zaanstreek.
