Whispers of “Lena” still echo around the H. Maria Magdalenakerk, even though the magnificent structure itself vanished long ago. The H. Maria Magdalenakerk once graced Spaarndammerstraat, a testament to the genius of architect P.J.H. Cuypers. Consecrated in 1891, the H. Maria Magdalenakerk served as a beacon of faith for the burgeoning community. This church wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a vibrant hub, hosting joyous wedding celebrations and solemn memorials in its spacious rooms. Nearby stood the St. Leo Convent, bustling with dedicated nuns who educated the local children. They poured their hearts into teaching, nurturing young minds in the adjoining school complex. Even the building of the H. Maria Magdalenakerk itself was a marvel. Built on a triangular plot, Cuypers ingeniously crafted a partially wedge-shaped nave, maximizing the available space. Its unique iron spire, a feature Cuypers also used in Groningen’s Sint-Jozefkerk, pierced the Amsterdam skyline. The H. Maria Magdalenakerk was considered a masterpiece of Dutch Neo-Gothic architecture. Yet, by the late 1950s, cracks began to appear, literally. The foundations faltered, a discovery made during the installation of a new heating system. While initially repaired, the damage was a harbinger of worse to come. The church’s very structure, the bricks themselves, couldn’t withstand the test of time. By the 1960s, the decline was irreversible. The last service was held in 1965. The H. Maria Magdalenakerk stood silent for two years before its demolition began in 1967. A demolition worker later recounted the Herculean effort required to dismantle the sturdy building. “It was one of the toughest demolition jobs I’ve ever done,” he declared, emphasizing the church’s robust construction. Even in its absence, the H. Maria Magdalenakerk’s legacy continues. The space it once occupied became a park, affectionately dubbed “Magdalenaparkje” by locals. Officially named Domela Nieuwenhuisplantsoen in 1973, the park retains echoes of the past, with remnants of the church’s foundations still visible. Further down Spaarndammerstraat, the Magdalenakapel served as a spiritual successor, keeping the parish’s spirit alive until its closure in 2012. A vibrant past, an echo in a park, a whisper of “Lena.” The H. Maria Magdalenakerk’s story, though ending in physical absence, continues to resonate in Amsterdam’s heart.
