Hidden from plain sight, the Grote Vermaning whispers tales of resilience and faith. This unassuming church, nestled in the heart of Haarlem, holds centuries of stories within its walls. The Grote Vermaning, built in 1683, stands as a testament to the Dutch spirit of tolerance and the quiet strength of the Doopsgezinde community. Initially, the Grote Vermaning was a schuilkerk, a hidden church. Doopsgezinden, like Catholics and Remonstrants, were “tolerated” during the Dutch Republic. Their beliefs were accepted, but public displays of worship were restricted. This meant no prominent street entrances, no towering steeples, and certainly no ringing church bells to call the faithful. The Grote Vermaning’s original entrance was tucked away in the Peuzelaarsteeg, a narrow alleyway. Later, in 1717 and 1757, more visible entrances were added on Frankestraat and Grote Houtstraat. This reflected the growing acceptance of the Doopsgezinden. Inside the Grote Vermaning, simplicity reigns. The plain design reflects the Doopsgezinden’s focus on a practical, devoted Christian life, a life of discipleship. The very name “Vermaning” emphasizes this. It refers to the admonition, the urging by the preacher to follow Christ’s example. It’s a call to action, not just a place of worship. The Grote Vermaning housed prominent figures. Jeronimo de Vries served as preacher from 1872 to 1908, sharing the pulpit with Jacobus Craandijk from 1884 to 1900. Imagine their sermons echoing through this hallowed space, inspiring generations of Doopsgezinden. The Grote Vermaning’s story continues. It shares its history with the Kleine Vermaning in Heemstede. Both serve the Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente Haarlem. These two churches, one grand and one small, stand together as symbols of a community’s enduring faith. The Grote Vermaning stands before you, a quiet monument to perseverance and belief. Its history is etched not in grandeur, but in the quiet strength of its community.
