“Respect sex workers all over the world.” That’s what the inscription on the Belle statue says. Now, look beyond this modern sentiment to the towering structure behind it. This is the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam’s oldest building.

The Oude Kerk stands in stark contrast to its surroundings. It’s located in De Wallen, Amsterdam’s main red-light district. This juxtaposition of the sacred and the profane creates a unique atmosphere. The church has witnessed centuries of Amsterdam’s history unfold around it.

Imagine stepping back in time to the early 13th century. A wooden chapel stood here. Over time, it was replaced by the stone church we see today, consecrated in 1306. The Oude Kerk has undergone numerous renovations. Fifteen generations of Amsterdam citizens have contributed to its evolution.

Originally a Roman Catholic church, the Oude Kerk became Calvinist after the Reformation in 1578. During the 16th-century battles, the church suffered looting and defacement. Mobs destroyed most of the church art. Only the ceiling paintings were spared.

Locals once gathered here for all sorts of reasons. They gossiped, sold goods, and sought shelter. The Calvinists, however, did not approve. They expelled the homeless and imposed order. In 1681, an oak screen was installed to close off the choir.

Did you know the Oude Kerk once housed the city archives? Important documents were locked in an iron chest. The chest was kept in the iron chapel for safekeeping.

Notice the floor beneath your feet. It consists entirely of gravestones. The Oude Kerk was built on a cemetery. Over 10,000 Amsterdam citizens are buried here. Famous figures like Saskia van Uylenburgh, Rembrandt’s wife, also rest here. Rembrandt himself was a frequent visitor to the Oude Kerk. His children were christened here.

Look up to appreciate the ceiling. The Oude Kerk boasts Europe’s largest medieval wooden vault. These Estonian oak planks date back to 1390. They also contribute to the church’s excellent acoustics.

The Oude Kerk is home to four pipe organs. One was built by Christian Vater in 1724. It is considered one of the finest Baroque organs in Europe.

Today, the Oude Kerk serves as a center for contemporary art. It also showcases its rich heritage. Site-specific installations by renowned artists are displayed here.

Each year in mid-March, Catholics gather at the Oude Kerk. They celebrate the Miracle of Amsterdam. This commemorates a Host that did not burn in a fire. The Host was once kept here but disappeared during the Reformation.

As you leave the Oude Kerk, consider its enduring presence. It’s Amsterdam’s oldest building, a testament to the city’s ever-changing story. From its religious origins to its current role as a cultural hub, the Oude Kerk remains a vital part of Amsterdam’s identity.
